Deven Marriner is a multi-disciplinary artist currently based in Melbourne/Naarm. Through sustained processes of drawing and mark-making, Marriner’s practice explores relationships between time, perception and lived experience in dialogue with ideas drawn from philosophy and the natural sciences.

Working across drawing, painting, photography and video, his research considers tensions between quantitative structures of measurement and the qualitative experience of being in the world. Repetition, duration and attentiveness operate as central elements within the work, with drawing functioning as both a material and contemplative process.

Since his first solo exhibition in 1996 at JB Contemporary, Marriner has exhibited nationally and internationally across artist-run spaces, galleries and institutions, including the National Museum of Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, West Space and the George Paton Gallery.

After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2007, Marriner relocated to New York City where he worked with a number of major contemporary art organisations, including White Box, the Emily Harvey Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (MACBA). During this period, he also continued to exhibit throughout New York.

In 2022, Marriner completed a Master of Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. In 2024, he established Helgoland: Studio Project, an expanded studio and exhibition concept based in Collingwood.
