For the final exhibition of its 2026 curatorial program, Helgoland is delighted to present All things being equal: aA+bB⇌cC+dD, a solo exhibition by Mia Salsjö, one of Australia’s most compelling contemporary artists.
Recently awarded the inaugural MUMA × MACSYS Artist-in-Residence, Salsjö has been working alongside researchers at the ARC Centre for Mathematical Analysis of Cellular Systems (MACSYS), exploring the translation of scientific data into visual and musical forms.
The exhibition brings together two bodies of work from distinct periods of Salsjö’s career, presenting a selection of recent drawings developed through her MACSYS residency alongside earlier graphite works.
Through intricate systems of lines, numerical calculations and geometric relationships, these works reveal the intensity of Salsjö’s practice, where drawing becomes a process of sustained physical and intellectual labour. Rather than following predetermined compositions, her drawings emerge gradually through repetition, accumulation and transformation.
Presented together, these works offer a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of Salsjö’s practice over more than a decade, revealing the ongoing relationship between mathematical structures, artistic process and the translation of information.
Marking Salsjö’s first exhibition in a commercial gallery context in over a decade, All things being equal offers audiences a rare opportunity to encounter her work outside the major institutional exhibitions and commissions for which she is widely recognised.
Accompanying the exhibition is a new essay by Dr Edward Colless, LACUNA EX MACHINA.
